“HOUSE MASTERSHIP: NURTURING HEARTS, FOSTERING GROWTH”
Introduction: Telangana Tribal Welfare Residential Degree College for Women, Medak is a residential college, with 85% seats exclusively reserved for tribal women. As most of them are first-generation learners from their families, it is a real task for the institution to retain the students in the college for three years, as most of their parents consider the college as a refuge center; availing its services till they get them married off. So, giving utmost care to our students, diverting their minds to better things is the primary concern of the college. To address this issue, the faculties are assigned with various responsibilities aimed at fostering a conducive living and learning environment for the students. Among the various duties assigned to them, the House Mastership being the most significant one.
The House consists (maximum) of a section in a class and each House will have a lecturer who will be designated as the House Master and is a loco parent to all the students in the House, taking care of their studies, stay, Health, Hygiene, safety etc., and moulding them as good citizens.
Here are some common roles and duties performed by a House Master:
1. Student Support and Guidance:
The House Master provides guidance and support to students, helping them navigate academic, personal, and social challenges. They offer counseling at least once a week and refer students to appropriate resources when needed.They observe the feelings and psychological conditions of students closely and take appropriate steps by informing the principal if any disorder is noticed.They serve as confidants and counselors, offering emotional support and guidance to students facing personal challenges or crises. They promote a culture of inclusivity and empathy, ensuring that every student feels valued and supported within the college community.
2. Residential Management:
- Conducts ‘Kit Inspection’ every day from 8:30 to 8:45 AM and a surprise inspection once a month.Any unwanted literature/ material found with students are collected and handed over to the principal for disposal.
- House masters see to it that all the student amenities like textbooks, note books, bed sheets, plates and glasses etc., reach to all the students in their house as and when the stock is received.
- Sees that the students do not use cell phones.
- They are entrusted with the responsibility of overseeing the day-to-day operations of the residential facilities within the college premises. This includes managing the dormitories, dining, recreational areas, and other communal spaces. They ensure that the living quarters are well-maintained, hygienic, and conducive to student life.
3. Safety and Security: Ensures the safety and security of students by implementing and enforcing safety protocols, conducting regular inspections, and addressing any safety concerns promptly. They escort their students to the training camps and exam centerswhen required. Visitors, to meet students are allowed only with the permission of house masters.
4.Enforcing Rules and Regulations: Enforcing college policies, rules, and regulations within the residential facility, promoting discipline and responsible behavior among students.
The House Master takes necessary measures to see that RAGGING in any form is curbed. All newly admitted students are given support & strength to avoid becoming a victim of Ragging.
5. Emergency Response: Being prepared to respond to emergencies such as medical incidents, natural disasters, or security breaches, and coordinating with appropriate authorities when necessary.Any Hospitalized student is also to be monitored along with Staff Nurse.
6. Community Building:
- Fostering a sense of community and belonging among students by organizing social and recreational activities, facilitating peer interactions, and promoting mutual respect and understanding.
- Impact Programme is conducted for the parents before the students are sent home for vacation with an intention to educate the parents about the progress of their wards and facilities provided to them.
- ArrangesParent-Teacher meeting once in a quarter and sees that they discuss all aspects of student with the parents. They keep the parents informed and take their support and cooperation in the development of college.
7. Academic Monitoring: They monitor the academic progress of the students, providing guidance and support as needed. They organize study sessions, remedial teaching or other academic initiatives to enhance the learning outcomes of the students. Additionally, housemasters act as liaisons between the students and the academic faculty, facilitating communication and addressing any academic concerns or issues that may arise.
They are assigned with Night Study Duties to clarify the doubts of the students for their academic progress.
8. Conflict Resolution: Resolving conflicts or disputes among students, promoting peaceful coexistence, and mediating disagreements in a fair and impartial manner. Regular counseling is given to students to maintain peace and harmony in the college.
9. Communication: Maintaining open and effective communication with students, staff, parents, and relevant stakeholders, keeping them informed about important issues, events, and developments within the residential facility.
10. Role Model and Mentorship: They serve as mentors and role models, guiding the students in their personal and academic endeavors. By fostering a culture of mutual respect and accountability, housemasters contribute to the overall discipline and decorum within the college campus.
House Masters also oversee the social and cultural life of the students, organizing various extracurricular activities, events, and celebrations. These activities play a crucial role in fostering a sense of belonging and camaraderie among the students. They encourage participation and engagement in cultural, sports, and other co-curricular activities, promoting holistic development beyond the academic realm.
11. Documentation and Reporting: Keeping accurate records of student-related matters, incidents, and interventions.
In addition to their responsibilities towards the students, House Masters also collaborate with college administration and staff to ensure the smooth functioning of the residential facilities. They participate in staff meetings, collaborate on policy development, and provide input on matters related to student welfare and campus life. They serve as advocates for the students, representing their interests and concerns to the authorities.
Overall, House Master plays a pivotal role in creating a supportive and conducive living and learning environment for students.
