Introduction
The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a Union Government of India (GoI) Scheme, Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports started in the year in the year 1969. It provides an opportunity to the student to take part in various government lead community service activities & programmes.
The sole aim of the NSS is to provide hands on experience to young students in delivering community service.
National Service Scheme primarily stands for channelizing the students youth for building the Nation
- Gandhian Vision – Education not an intellectual luxury , but for empowering common along with study social responsibility.
- Ever since independence there has been growing awareness of the desirability of involving
students in National Service. - The first Education Commission (1950) recommended the introduction of national service by students on a voluntary basis.

AIM
- Developing the personality and character of the student youth through voluntary community service. 'Education through Service' is the purpose of the NSS.
Objectives
- Understand the community in which they work
- Understand themselves in relation to their community
- Identify the needs and problems of the community and involve them in problem solving process
- Develop among themselves a sense of social and civic responsibility
- Utilize their knowledge in finding practical solution to individual and community problems
- Develop competence required for group-living and sharing of responsibilities Gain skills in mobilizing community participation Acquire leadership qualities and democratic attitude Develop capacity to meet emergencies and natural disaster and Practice national integration and social harmony. - NSS volunteers generally work in villages, slums and voluntary agencies to complete 120 hours of regular activities during an academic year. As per the fundamental principles of National Service Scheme, a volunteer is expected to remain in constant touch with the community. Hence, it is of vital importance that a particular village/slum is selected for implementation of NSS programs. As the NSS volunteer is to live with the members of the community during the 7 days Special Camping Programme and learn from their experience during his/her tenure in NSS, the village/slum should be carefully selected for adoption by NSS unit.
Duties of NSS Volunteers:
- To establish rapport with the people in the project area.
- Identify needs, Problems and resources of the community.
- Plan Programmes and carry out the plans.
- Relate his learning and experience towards finding solutions to the problems identifies.
- Record the activities in his work diary symmetrically and assess the progress periodically and effect changes as and when needed.
Code of Conduct of NSS Volunteers:
- All volunteers shall work under the guidance of the group leader nominated by the programme officer.
- They shall make themselves worthy of the confidence and cooperation of the group/community leadership.
- They shall scrupulously avoid entering into any controversial issues.
They shall keep day-to-day record of their activities / experience in the enclosing pages of the diary and submit to the Group Leader/ Program Officer for periodic guidance. - It is obligatory on the part of every volunteer to wear the NSS Badge while on work
Benefits of Being a NSS Volunteer:
A NSS volunteer who takes part in the community service programme would either be a college level or a senior secondary level student. Being an active member these student volunteers would have the exposure and experience to be the following:
- an accomplished social leader
- an efficient administrator
- a person who understands human nature
National Service Scheme is a voluntary organization of young students that provides services to society selflessly. It aims to doctrine society welfare in students through community services. Students are the building blocks of society. It is a proven fact that organized group activities are potential enabling factors for cognitive developments and enriching the spirit of brotherhood. We at NSS, strive to achieve similar goals through activities which have a direct impact on the society and environment at large.
