The Civil Services Examination (CSE)

The Civil Services Examination (CSE) conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) is one of the most prestigious and challenging exams in India. The exam is conducted in three stages: Preliminary Examination (Prelims), Main Examination (Mains), and Personality Test (Interview). Here's an overview of the exam pattern for each stage:

 

1. Preliminary Examination (Prelims):

 

- Objective Type: The Prelims consist of two papers, both objective type (multiple-choice questions).

 

  - Paper-I: General Studies (GS) - 200 marks

  - Paper-II: Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT) - 200 marks

 

  Note: Paper-II (CSAT) is a qualifying paper with a minimum qualifying mark of 33%. Marks from this paper are not counted for ranking in the Prelims.

 

- Duration: Each paper is of 2 hours duration.

 

- Negative Marking: There is a penalty for wrong answers. One-third (0.33) of the marks assigned to a question will be deducted for incorrect answers.

 

2. Main Examination (Mains):

 

- Qualifying Papers:

 

  - Paper-A: One of the Indian languages chosen from the prescribed list (Qualifying) - 300 marks

  - Paper-B: English (Qualifying) - 300 marks

 

- Papers to be Counted for Merit:

 

  - Paper-I: Essay - 250 marks

  - Paper-II: General Studies-I (Indian Heritage and Culture, History, and Geography of the World and Society) - 250 marks

  - Paper-III: General Studies-II (Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social Justice, and International Relations) - 250 marks

  - Paper-IV: General Studies-III (Technology, Economic Development, Biodiversity, Environment, Security and Disaster Management) - 250 marks

  - Paper-V: General Studies-IV (Ethics, Integrity, and Aptitude) - 250 marks

  - Paper-VI: Optional Subject - Paper 1 - 250 marks

  - Paper-VII: Optional Subject - Paper 2 - 250 marks

 

- Duration: Each paper in the Main Examination is of 3 hours duration.

 

- Marks for Interview/Personality Test: The Interview or Personality Test is of 275 marks.

 

3. Personality Test (Interview):

 

- The interview assesses the candidate's personality, suitability for a career in public service, mental alertness, critical powers of assimilation, clear and logical exposition, the balance of judgment, variety and depth of interest, ability for social cohesion, and leadership skills.

 

- Total Marks: The total marks for the Main Examination (Mains) and Personality Test (Interview) combined determine the final ranking of candidates.

 

- Final Result: The final result is based on the cumulative score obtained in the Main Examination and the Personality Test.

 

Note:

- The UPSC allows candidates to choose one optional subject from a list of subjects for Papers VI and VII in the Main Examination.

- The syllabus for each paper is specified by the UPSC, and candidates are expected to prepare thoroughly, covering a wide range of topics.

Interview:

- Candidates who qualify the main exam are called for an interview. The interview is usually conducted by participating banks.
